Take the power back! Direct action this week.

Comrades,

If you would like to participate in a direct action with Occupy Memphis against the very banks that have destroyed the economy and gotten rich in the process come to the Lamplighter tonight at 8 pm. We will be meeting on the back porch for about an hour and a half.

This is the last activity of the Marxist Student Union this semester. This is a chance to move your revolutionary ideas beyond the college campus and take action.

If you cannot make tonight's meeting, but would like to take part in the action, e-mail the editor for details.

The Marxist Student Union collaborates with the Occupy Memphis

Comrades,

at our next meeting, Friday Nov 18, we will be joined by the Occupy Memphis Anti-Capitalist Caucus. If you would like to learn more about the local Occupy movement, this is an excellent opportunity to do so without having to even leave campus. If you have any friends who are curious about Marxism, revolutionary theories, activism, and/or the Occupy movement bring them with you to room 208 in the University Center this Friday. We have a very tightly scheduled agenda and will have the room open at 5:30,  get started at 6pm sharp, and be wrapped up by 9 pm. In keeping with the tradition of the anti-Capitalist caucus, we will sing "The Internationale" at the end of our joint meeting. The music and lyrics for the Internationale will be posted immediately so anyone who does not know the song can at least get familiar with the tune before Friday night.

Election Day in Memphis District 7

Comrades,

The Marxist Student Union was out in support of Lee Harris this morning for one simple reason, as a member of the United Campus Workers / Communication Workers of America he is in the same union as the editor and every union member at the University of Memphis. Despite the hype, things are very simple when it comes to elections like this one.

1.  Vote for the candidate who belongs to a union.

2.  If the candidate belongs to your union work for their campaign.

The myth-buster pamphlet created by the Occupy Memphis Anti-Capitalist Caucus.

Comrades,

We, our comrades, and fellow travelers of varied associations and alignments at Occupy Memphis have come together under the banner of anti-Capitalism. Fully aware that over half a century of propaganda has leveled its lies against us, the caucus decided that it should create a pamphlet to counter some of the more overt falsehoods perpetuated by the opponents of liberty and equality.

Here is a draft the editor is submitting to the caucus for approval before it is placed at the information booth and distributed generally. The eight points as well as many of the ideas countering them arose in last week's caucus meeting. Furthermore, the collective editorial process of review and revision ensures that this document is not the product of one person or point of view. Rather, this is a manifestation of the caucus' militant readiness to confront the lies of Capitalism.

One week left in Lee Harris' run-off and more photos from Occupy Memphis

Comrades,

There is less than a week left in the run-off election between Lee Harris (a union member, resident of district 7 and son of an air-conditioning repair man) and Kemba Ford (want-to-be actress and scion of the corrupt political machine that has been keeping Memphis one of the poorest cities in the nation for far too long). Tomorrow, join the Marxist Student Union at the Harris campaign headquarters from 1-3 pm as we lend our support to Lee Harris' ongoing effort to improve the city of Memphis by being an advocate for the working class!

Last weekend, the Labor Agenda broadcast from Occupy Memphis and helped educate the Occupiers on the history and current concerns of the labor movement in Memphis. The editor was particularly glad that Chad Johnson from AFSCME stuck around after the show and broke it down for us. I am sure everyone at AFSCME knows how lucky they are to have him.
Below I have included a few pictures from the event.

Comrades,
a few of us have been actively participating in Occupy Memphis, and we encourage everyone to support this popular and grassroots movement to the best of their ability. Tonight at the General Assembly, the we will read our endorsement of Occupy Memphis. It would be great if all of us could make it out to Civic Plaza tonight at 7pm as a physical manifesation of our membership in the 99% and solidarity with the Occupiers.

Here are some of the pictures from yesterday's march to the Civil Rights Museum.

Don't forget we're meeting this Friday at 5 pm to discuss the second half of the Communist Manifesto.

Comrades,

This video (in four different clips) is amazing. Tim Wheeler, The Dean, talks about writing for the People's Wold for the past twenty-five years in incredible depth, bredth and elegance. The People's World New Writer's Conference has been great. I ardently suggest all revolutionary writers find an opportunity to work with the wonderful comrades in Chicago at the People's World as soon as they can.

The Marxist Student Union endorses Occupy Memphis

Pending Union approval the following will be delivered to Occupy Memphis at the next convenient General Assembly (likely after Oct 16).

The Marxist Student Union endorses Occupy Memphis
After speaking with our colleagues in Occupy Wall Street, Occupy Los Angeles, Occupy Chicago, Occupy Austin, and other cities, combined with what our members have witnessed within the local working groups and General Assemblies, we feel confident that Occupy Memphis is a localized expression of the larger national movement and a voice of the 99%.
We feel that people who must work to survive defines the 99% versus the 1% who simply exploit our labor. In a close-to-ideal society each of us would get what we need, be it education, housing, employment, or medical care. In that society each of us would have the same access to political power and recourse before the law. In that society each of us, based upon relative wealth/riches, would contribute to the overall endeavor of society to ensure all are included and cared for.
It is our sincere hope that our endorsement is seen as nothing more than it is: a statement of solidarity with the working class of Memphis who have taken the reins of democracy in their hands without waiting for permission.

While we are a small organization, we want to express our support of Occupy Memphis and the people working day and night to make it happen.

Discuss the Communist Manifesto Friday, October 14, with the Marxist Student Union

Comrades,
This is just a friendly reminder that the next meeting of the Marxist Student Union is this Friday, October14 at 5pm in UC (University Center) 208. On Friday we will discuss the Communist Manifesto and its continuing relevance to today's working class.
If you do not own a copy of the Manifesto you can read it for free at the Marxist Internet Archives: http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1848/communist-manifesto/index.htm You can also listen to the audio book of the Communist Manifesto free of charge thanks to LibriVox: http://librivox.org/the-communist-manifesto-by-karl-marx-and-friendrich-engles/

The Vice President and editor of http://marxiststudentunion.blogpot.com will be in Chicago attending the People's World Writers' Conference on Friday and regretfully not be able to make it to this meeting of the Marxist Student Union. Why the Marxist Student Union supports Lee Harris

Comrades,

The run-off for the 7th district of Memphis is very simple.

We support the candidate who is the son of an air conditioning repair man and a public school teacher over the spoiled daughter of a felon who was too corrupt for Washington D.C.. We support the candidate who lives in District 7 and has done so for the last 8 years. We support the candidate who walked away from a lucrative legal career in order to give back to the city of his birth by teaching at the University of Memphis over the one whose only job has involved pretending to be someone she is not.

We support the most educated person in the race. We support the voice of the working class. We support our fellow union member.

In short, it is time for us to get in line and get to work and make Memphis the envy if the mid-south. It begins with Lee Harris. Where it ends is up to you.

Здравствуйте from the Marxist Student Union

Comrades,
The editor's knowledge of Russian begins with a phrase that sounds like"Vuy gav-oh-rite-y po angliyski" (do you speak English) and ends with something that sounds like "dist-rovi-ana piva" (distilled beer). Despite this shortcoming, over the past week 1/6 of this website's readers have been from Russia. I hope each "tovarich ruski"excuses how the editor has mangled their language. For our Russian audience and to honor the profound achievements of their countrymen in the workers' struggle the Marxist Student Union shares the following video.

Join the Marxist Student Union and support Lee Harris' run-off against Ford

Comrades,

Lee Harris narrowly beat Kemba Ford in the race for District 7, forcing both candidates into a run off that will be decided November 10. NOW is the time to do ALL we can to support a pro-union anti-discrimination candidate in his effort to change the city of Memphis. Starting next week we will multiply our efforts on his campaign. The editor would like all members to commit to volunteering AT LEAST two hours a week to his campaign. Let's show everyone at the Lee Harris campaign, in District 7, and the city of Memphis, when the chips are down you can count on the Marxists to do what the working class does best -- work.

The Communist Manifesto

Comrades, if you are not a member of the Communist Party of the USA you might not know who Angela Davis is. As an American Communist, the editor is proud to say she was a radical once on the run from the federal government for her material support of militant Black Panther operations. Angela Davis was also the CPUSA candidate for the Vice Presidency of the United States more than once.

The Communist Manifesto  is THE foundational document of Marxism. Print out these fliers by the dozens. Tack, tape, post, and paste it everywhere. Spread the word! The revolution waits only for you.

The Marxist Student Union's Analysis of Lenin's "The Three Sources... of Marxism"

Comrades,

Tonight's meeting of the Marxist Student Union was a phenomenal display of Marxism in action. Two new comrades joined with the M.S.U. to discuss Lenin's "The Three Sources and Three Component Parts of Marxism." After a brief contextualizing of the text and its creator, the President led an insightful discussion that focused on the difference between dialectics and metaphysics. From there we went on to talk about how dialectical and historical materialism are foundational to proletarian class consciousness.

In short order one comrade asked the group how understandable or readable they thought the text was. Like seasoned revolutionary theorists, the comrades energetically criticized Lenin's article based upon their analysis of its content, rhetorical technique, and organization. More than one of us felt Lenin's jargon was off putting and another pointed out that the writer is never gives concrete examples and lacks specificity. Another felt that Lenin was a bad writer, a poor philosopher, and a terrible scientist, but a gifted compiler and condenser of Marxism. In the end, Lenin was praised as a brilliant organizer, not only of the Russian Revolution, but of this article in particular. The idea was also advanced that how Lenin organized his essay modeled Marxist analysis . Part I details the condition, II determines the cause, and III advances correct revolutionary action based upon sound analysis.

Near the end of our critical analysis, the V.P. pointed out one passage in particular that absolutely unifies every Marxist and irreconcilably separates Marxism not only from liberalism but also other revolutionary paradigms:

"Political institutions are a superstructure on the economic foundation."

The above concept is the surest litmus test for the existence and intensity of Marxism. Marxists know their enemy. Capitalism is the enemy of all working people and, it is Capitalism that we fight.

Working on the Harris campaign

Comrades,

Please join with us Wednesday evening to volunteer at the Lee Harris campaign headquarters to work his phone bank from 6-7. We will meet at 5:30 in Mitchell to organize our carpool / caravan.

In case you need a copy of Lenin's "The Three Sources and Three Component Parts of Marxism" you can find it at the above link. Our upcoming discussion would be enriched by the thoughts of those comrades who are familiar with multiple schools of Marxism and how these points of view respond to Lenin's article.

Before signing off, if you are interested in having an action on Columbus Day to (at least) refute the "discovery" of the Americas, speak out against their subjugation by the imperialist European powers, and celebrate the Indigenous,  Mexica, and  Mestizo cultures of North and South America organize your thoughts and bring them on Friday. Columbus Day is less than two weeks away and we should do our best to act decisively and quickly in order to have an effective action.

Vigil for Troy Davis

Comrades,

Members of the Marxist Student Union were present at the vigil for Troy Davis who was murdered yesterday by the State of Georgia. Representatives from the student organizations present  were invited to say a few words on this sad occasion.  After representatives from the Progressive Student Association, the University of Memphis NAACP, the Black Student Association, and two sororities (whose names escape me) spoke, the V.P. of the Marxist Student Union expressed gratitude for having the chance to stand in solidarity with his fellow students against this injustice. He went on to say that the death of Troy Davis shows the hypocrisy of our system and its claims to embody freedom and justice. He closed saying that he and the membership of the Marxist Student Union look forward to the day when justice is available to all, real justice not just justice before the law. Justice where no man has to pick up a gun to make ends meet, where no one feels the need to commit crime because everyone has enough.

After the vigil a few people asked about the Marxist Student Union’s next meeting and took fliers with them. It would be good if this vigil led to a greater sense of cooperation and solidarity between all student organizations devoted to the cause of equality.

Doing the work

Comrades,

Last night a handful of us did our small part to help pro-union and anti-discrimination, candidate for City Council (not to mention University of  Memphis professor of Law) Lee Harris in his campaign to improve district 7 and the city of Memphis. It was great to be able to call our fellow voters and hear what was important to them and let them know how Lee Harris intends to represent them on City Council. Let's all resist the urge to be armchair philosophers and continue to do our job as workers to support campaigns that put people before profits.

Our next meeting is Friday, September 30th at 5pm in UC208. Feel free to print out and post the above where ever possible and invite your friends to join us. You should start seeing the fliers in the University Center and around campus beginning tomorrow.

Next on the agenda

Comrades,

If you missed this evening's meeting, no fear. Copies of the two handouts are available below. It was really nice meeting everyone and we hope to see you all Tuesday evening in the lobby

This Tuesday we are all meeting in Mitchell at 5:30 pm to caravan over to Lee Harris' campaign headquarters and work his phones until around 7pm. Lee Harris is a pro-union candidate running for the district 7 city council seat. To learn more about the candidate and where he stands check out: http://www.leeharrisformemphis.com/. Regardless of how you feel about the candidate, Tuesday evening will be a good chance to get a glimpse into the local political process.

The next meeting of the MSU will be September 30th from 5-7:30 in a yet to be determined room of the University Center. At our second meeting we will talk about Lenin's article "The Three Sources and Three Component Parts of Marxism." for about 30 minutes before watching Michael Moore's "Capitalism, A Love Story." The Lenin article is very short, but it would be good if we all read it a few days before our next meeting to give ourselves enough time to really figure out what Lenin is saying and why we agree or disagree with him.

For October, we are reading the infamous and oft-banned Communist Manifesto. The Manifesto is much longer than the Lenin piece and we should try to give ourselves enough time to read it very closely over a day or so.

I can not wait until Thursday evening for the opportunity to discuss, one of the finest moments of the CPUSA, the Abraham Lincoln brigade with fellow Marxists. Personally, I find the narrative (insert appropriately sufficient qualifier for "narrative" to satisfy whatever self-conscious theoretical paradigm you subscribe to) of the Spanish Civil War (sweeping and specific) to be among the most epic and romantic of texts. Many visitors showed their solidarity by wearing one of the "Capitalism Sucks" buttons provided by the Young Communist League. Fliers were handed out for the UCW-CWA and we had the chance to mention our support of Lee Harris' campaign for City Council to more than one University of Memphis Student.
