Photos from Occupy Memphis

Comrades,
a few of us have been actively participating in Occupy Memphis, and we encourage everyone to support this popular and grassroots movement to the best of their ability. Tonight at the General Assembly, the we will read our endorsement of Occupy Memphis. It would be great if all of us could make it out to Civic Plaza tonight at 7pm as a physical manifesation of our membership in the 99% and solidarity with the Occupiers.

Here are some of the pictures from yesterday's march to the Civil Rights Museum.

Don't forget we're meeting this Friday at 5 pm to discuss the second half of the Communist Manifesto.

Tim Wheeler, Havana Calling

Comrades,

This video (in four different clips) is amazing. Tim Wheeler, The Dean, talks about writing for the People's Wold for the past twenty-five years in incredible depth, bredth and elegance. The People's World New Writer's Conference has been great. I ardently suggest all revolutionary writers find an opportunity to work with the wonderful comrades in Chicago at the People's World as soon as they can.

The Marxist Student Union endorses Occupy Memphis

Pending Union approval the following will be delivered to Occupy Memphis at the next convenient General Assembly (likely after Oct 16).

The Marxist Student Union endorses Occupy Memphis
After speaking with our colleagues in Occupy Wall Street, Occupy Los Angeles, Occupy Chicago, Occupy Austin, and other cities, combined with what our members have witnessed within the local working groups and General Assemblies, we feel confident that Occupy Memphis is a localized expression of the larger national movement and a voice of the 99%.
We feel that people who must work to survive defines the 99% versus the 1% who simply exploit our labor. In a close-to-ideal society each of us would get what we need, be it education, housing, employment, or medical care. In that society each of us would have the same access to political power and recourse before the law. In that society each of us, based upon relative wealth/riches, would contribute to the overall endeavor of society to ensure all are included and cared for.
It is our sincere hope that our endorsement is seen as nothing more than it is: a statement of solidarity with the working class of Memphis who have taken the reins of democracy in their hands without waiting for permission.

While we are a small organization, we want to express our support of Occupy Memphis and the people working day and night to make it happen.

Discuss the Communist Manifesto Friday, October 14, with the Marxist Student Union

Comrades,
This is just a friendly reminder that the next meeting of the Marxist Student Union is this Friday, October14 at 5pm in UC (University Center) 208. On Friday we will discuss the Communist Manifesto and its continuing relevance to today's working class.
If you do not own a copy of the Manifesto you can read it for free at the Marxist Internet Archives: http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1848/communist-manifesto/index.htm You can also listen to the audio book of the Communist Manifesto free of charge thanks to LibriVox: http://librivox.org/the-communist-manifesto-by-karl-marx-and-friendrich-engles/

The Vice President and editor of http://marxiststudentunion.blogpot.com will be in Chicago attending the People's World Writers' Conference on Friday and regretfully not be able to make it to this meeting of the Marxist Student Union. I look forward to hearing about the meeting, and all of my comrades' insights into the Manifesto, when I return to Memphis Monday morning.

Why the Marxist Student Union supports Lee Harris

Comrades,

The run-off for the 7th district of Memphis is very simple.

We support the candidate who is the son of an air conditioning repair man and a public school teacher over the spoiled daughter of a felon who was too corrupt for Washington D.C.. We support the candidate who lives in District 7 and has done so for the last 8 years. We support the candidate who walked away from a lucrative legal career in order to give back to the city of his birth by teaching at the University of Memphis over the one whose only job has involved pretending to be someone she is not.

We support the most educated person in the race. We support the voice of the working class. We support our fellow union member.

In short, it is time for us to get in line and get to work and make Memphis the envy if the mid-south. It begins with Lee Harris. Where it ends is up to you.

Здравствуйте from the Marxist Student Union

Comrades,
The editor's knowledge of Russian begins with a phrase that sounds like"Vuy gav-oh-rite-y po angliyski" (do you speak English) and ends with something that sounds like "dist-rovi-ana piva" (distilled beer). Despite this shortcoming, over the past week 1/6 of this website's readers have been from Russia. I hope each "tovarich ruski"excuses how the editor has mangled their language. For our Russian audience and to honor the profound achievements of their countrymen in the workers' struggle the Marxist Student Union shares the following video.

Join the Marxist Student Union and support Lee Harris' run-off against Ford

Comrades,

Lee Harris narrowly beat Kemba Ford in the race for District 7, forcing both candidates into a run off that will be decided November 10. NOW is the time to do ALL we can to support a pro-union anti-discrimination candidate in his effort to change the city of Memphis. Starting next week we will multiply our efforts on his campaign. The editor would like all members to commit to volunteering AT LEAST two hours a week to his campaign. Let's show everyone at the Lee Harris campaign, in District 7, and the city of Memphis, when the chips are down you can count on the Marxists to do what the working class does best -- work.

The Communist Manifesto

Comrades, if you are not a member of the Communist Party of the USA you might not know who Angela Davis is. As an American Communist, the editor is proud to say she was a radical once on the run from the federal government for her material support of militant Black Panther operations. Angela Davis was also the CPUSA candidate for the Vice Presidency of the United States more than once.

The Communist Manifesto  is THE foundational document of Marxism. Print out these fliers by the dozens. Tack, tape, post, and paste it everywhere. Spread the word! The revolution waits only for you.

Roll up your sleeves for the Marxist Student Union

Comrades,
I'm sending everyone a quick note to let everyone know about two events scheduled for next week. If you are interested in volunteering an hour of your time to work on Lee Harris' campaign for the 7th district city council seat we will meet in the lobby of Mitchell Hall at 5:30 on Wednesday Oct 5. Election day is Oct 6 and if you can help get a  pro union, anti discrimination candidate on city council, e-mail marxiststudentunion@gmail.com for details as we will be doing a variety of work throughout the day. Lastly, on Friday Oct 7 we will meet to submit and decide on a design for the Marxist Student logo and banner. If you would like to see the submissions and cast your vote be in UC 208 at 1 pm. If you were not at our last meeting and would like to submit a design(s) send us an e-mail for more information.

Our next general meeting is Friday Oct 14 when we will discuss "The Communist Manifesto." If you don't have a copy you can find it for free here: http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1848/communist-manifesto/index.htm. Thanks to the kindness of LibriVox, you can listen to the free audiobook of the Manifesto at http://librivox.org/the-communist-manifesto-by-karl-marx-and-friendrich-engels/.  After our discussion,  we will have our usual organizational management meeting. Please stick around for the management meeting if you would like to have a hand in deciding what texts we read, what political activism we engage in and the overall future of the Marxist Student Union.
